About This Class
Become even more resilient to being taken down in an altercation by practicing Judo at XCAL. Come learn a practical martial art developed by the samurai for empty handed combat after losing a weapon. For over 140 years this discipline has grown from small combat martial art to Olympic sport. See for yourself why it became a taught subject in many Japanese schools across their country, and why it’s picking up in popularity across the globe thanks to its dynamic trips, takedowns, and big throws seen in many pop culture movies and shows.
The activity is summarized by making connection to your training partner and attempting to put them on the flat of their back: Ippon, or “a score that ends the match and awards an automatic victory”. This can be achieved with one singular move, or a combination of 20-second pin or submission. At the very least, every practitioner will learn how to safely land on the ground. Not everyone will find themselves in a fight but on a long enough timeline we will all fall. So come learn a valuable skill in preserving your health from bad falls AND a martial art for self-defense or fitness!
