ABOUT THIS COURSE
XCAL’s Pistol Basics course provides a foundation for new shooters and a refresher for those with experience who want to keep their skills up. This comprehensive course will cover the fundamentals of stance, grip, sights and trigger control, as well as how to handle a firearm safely and responsibly. We will cover gun safety protocols, handling techniques, marksmanship fundamentals, ammunition and more.
Students will learn about several different types of firearms and ammunition, how to load and unload, operate and safely shoot a course of fire. The pistol basics training course is packed with both classroom instruction and hands-on experience that will give students the confidence needed to use their firearm safely.

This course serves as the prerequisite to the XCAL Pistol Basics II course.
Firearm rentals are available at the Range Check-in Counter. Ammunition and protective gear are available in the XCAL Store.
Virginia law requires a participant to be either a U.S. Citizen with a valid government photo ID (Driver’s License, Real ID or U.S. Passport); a naturalized citizen with a valid government photo ID; or a Permanent U.S. Resident with a valid government photo ID.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
- Prerequisite: None
- Gear Required:
- Pistol with at least one magazine or a Revolver; rentals available
- Eye and hearing protection
- Ammunition Required: 50 rounds FMJ or Frangible
- Recommended Gear: Pen and paper
- Dress: Closed-toe shoes (no heels) and comfortable, appropriate clothing.
