Functional Fitness

XCAL Functional Fitness is an all-encompassing training program focusing on strength, endurance, hypertrophy, and power that can help you reach any fitness goal. Functional Fitness means working out in a way that benefits you in everyday life by building strength, mobility, endurance, and stability. XFF members have access to over 7,000 square feet of workout space, including a connected 2,100 square foot outdoor turf field. Each 60-minute instructor-led class includes strength training, HIIT circuits, neuromuscular training, and more. If you’re looking to take a strength-based class, XFF is for you, whether you’re a beginner or have years of experience.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is primarily a grappling-based martial art with a strong emphasis on subduing and controlling another person regardless of the other person’s physical attributes. This is accomplished by using proper framing techniques and understanding body movement. Our classes are split into Gi (traditional kimono with a belt) and No-Gi (form-fitting athletic attire), with distinctions between practices in each format.

Gi Required
Gi classes will teach members how to mitigate an opponent’s grips and fight through a deficit when grips are employed. The traditional uniform, the Gi, is needed for the full experience but will not exclude someone from taking the class. Clothing is used for certain mechanics, such as chokes or pins, so it is important to learn how to address these actions. Because our attire will get sweaty, twisting leg attacks are not allowed in Gi classes since the pants do not give enough freedom of movement to our joints to train them safely. Striking and slams will be discussed in classes but not utilized, and our focus will be on using submissions to end an engagement instead.

Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a form of self-defense and physical training, first developed by the Israeli army in the 1940s and is based on the use of reflexive responses to threatening situations. In our classes, you will simulate a wide variety of scenarios to help build better overall awareness of your surroundings as well as deter aggressors and possibly incapacitate them. In practice, this is achieved through live sparring with safety equipment and situationally led by the instructor. Weapons training is incorporated into the curriculum, and we will supply students with training weapons and striking pads for class. It is encouraged for everyone to acquire their own mouthpiece, groin protection, and gloves, as these are personal items that will come and go with our members. Shoes are allowed for the mats specifically but cannot be used to enter common areas off of the mats, like the restroom.
